Some days are harder than others. That’s life. There are some days when the spark I need comes from the grace of someone else or somewhere other than a happy quote or exciting event. Today was just such a day. Our Hero was not progressing as well as we’d like him to, and along with his doctor, we debated whether or not to return to the hospital. The turning point came this afternoon when his youngest sister Charleen and her husband Tony came to see him. Mom brought him to the french doors where Tony and Charleen displayed their makeshift sign on the deck chair and then they all cried for a spell. It meant so much to dad – to all of us – that he seemed to perk up a bit, try a little harder, be more aware of the fact that, even in isolation, his family is still here and they’re willing to holler at him through the door. It mattered. (I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that dad’s sister Lois and great-niece Macie were trendsetters yesterday with this through-the-glass-door socialization.) When I got the mail this evening I opened the envelope to find this beautiful artist card swaddled in words of hopefulness. Tony raised three fine girls and his oldest, Jennifer and her husband Jon, have become incredibly dear to me. They sent the card and spoke the words I needed to hear as Tony and Charleen spoke theirs to mom and dad. They offered the kindness and compassion our world needed today. I have always maintained that I am the luckiest woman alive. I will never stop believing that and here is more proof that it’s true.
