archival job duties

The Blanding/Kirwan Complex photo team reconvened today with archivists Ruth Bryan (above) and Ginny Daley (not pictured). Ruth spearheaded this whole thing, trying to document the buildings before they’re taken down. They’ve been sitting empty for a couple of years, and boy, it’s amazing how quickly things falls apart. It’s also interesting what’s been left behind, like all these trophies we found in a case. As you can see, Crystal was planning her imaging attack against them. Meanwhile, Ruth was busy removing smaller items that could hold potential historic value.

Doug explored the underground tunnels between the buildings until we all met up in the old Blanding Tower laundry room, except for Ginny who was in another building collecting records. We loved the red shirt so much that a group photo was necessary. I have to say that these kinds of outings, these opportunities for collegial learning, are a big reason I enjoy working at the University. I’ve had some really wonderful experiences in my nineteen years at UK, and I’ve made some life-long friends along the way. I’m grateful for all of it.

I wish Office of Residence Life folks could have been involved with this project…

I believe they were involved in an earlier effort to gather everything they intended to donate to the archive, or am I thinking of another organization? Virtually everything had been removed by the time we got there.
