All the years I’ve walked by Barker Hall only recently did I noticed the KSC sign. I thought maybe it stood for Kentucky State College, but UK was never called that. We were Kentucky University A&M for a time, and just Kentucky University, but to my knowledge we were never Kentucky State College. So, I don’t know what it means (maybe someone reading this will enlighten me). In any case, attached to Barker Hall is Buell Armory where military students gather and practice. I was mighty proud walking by there today because this morning our shero was accepted to the Kentucky Honor Flight in May. All the more exciting is that we’ll be having lunch at the Women’s Memorial; a place she never thought she’d get to see in which she is represented. She deserves this recognition for her service. These honor flights are incredible gifts to veterans, and the very kind gentleman I spoke with on the phone today had me in tears describing the experience, for the vets, their guardians (me), and even for himself. Unfortunately, our hero is too ill to make the trip or we would make this a full family affair. I don’t want to jinx it, so if you’re the praying sort, say a prayer that our shero’s health holds up so she can go. If you’re the burning sage sort, fire it up. If you’re a well wishing, candle burning, blessings abound sort, we’ll take those, too. Here’s to honoring our shero.

I’m sending the full arsenal for her good health. I saw my mother’s record in the WWII memorial when I was in DC some years ago, and know how proud she would have been, as I was.

Thank you Kopana, our most precious baby girl, you do arrange amazing and surprising things for your dad and me. Thanks girls for your prayers that my health will hold up and I will be able to make this Honor Flight with my loving and beautiful Guardian. I am just so excited about ALL of this. Keep the prayers going, girls.
I found this clipping and don’t know where I got it but it touched my very heart and soul bringing to mind our veterans…..it reads:
I was too broke to give, but I gave
I was too weak to stand, but I stood
I was too sick to fight, but I fought
I was to young to die, but I died.

The funerals which dad and I have helped perform as Honor Guards along with our DAV Chapter #132 has been an honor and privilege for us and to follow these veterans, young and old, to their final resting place. It was as far as we could go with them. We did our duty as Chapter Honor Guards for these veterans, hoping to say something that might help the family, saying a final farewell:
“Our comrade lies down to rest awhile, under the arching sky, awaiting the bugle’s call. Behold the silver cord is loosed; the golden bowl is broken. We therefore commit his (or her) body to the grave, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, looking for resurrection and eternal life, to the honor and glory of God forever”
Then presenting the deceased family(s) with the American flag, the 21-gun salute over the head of the deceased veteran and finally the bugler will play TAPS. With tears in the eyes, still standing at attention, saluting Old Glory, and hearing the lonesome and final sound of the bugle with the blaring echo reaching every hillside around saying “rest now, Comrade, your battle is won”.
