Remember I said I had a great Friday? One of the things that made it so awesome was photographing yoga with my friend and most awesome masseuse, Jennifer Ernst. She provides free yoga at noon on Fridays downtown at Spiders Well which is really a tiny bar that’s part of McCarthy’s Irish Bar. Doing yoga in a pub would not be something I would have thought of doing, but talk about a cool idea. Yoga is a kind of spiritual centering anyway, and where better to do it than a building full of spirits, so to speak.

All but one of Jennifer’s regulars were absent this Friday (summer vacation time and all), but I wasn’t deterred. It was good practice for me, and the next time I’ll probably bring along my yoga mat with my camera. Jennifer also teaches yoga on Tuesdays at 6:30am at Triangle Park. I’m certain one of the these weeks I’ll manage to get up early enough to join in, and eventually photograph the session. I’m sure it’s a beautiful setting.

Lexington has a vibrant Irish community and this block on Upper Street between Main and Vine is at the heart of it. This was my first time inside McCarthy’s, but I doubt it will be my last. It felt like a real European pub. Coincidentally, I had just started reading The Green Man by British author Kingsley Amis just before starting my errands Friday morning. I was totally ready for a taste of the old country when I walked into McCarthy’s. I was not disappointed. Jennifer was surprised to see me, and we shared great conversation (as always). I had a blast and I’m going back. I’m also determined to get up and go to Triangle Park. Jennifer is awesome enough to get out of bed for.
