the graduate

Dad’s buddy, JC, (Uncle Tony’s grandson) graduated from kindergarten tonight at Wrigley Elementary School. We went to his graduation, and I have to say, it was the cutest thing ever. These kids were so well behaved, and just as impressive, they ran the program themselves. They knew what to do; what to say. Each student told the audience what they want to be when they grow up. I think JC said he wants to be a motocross racer (but don’t hold me to that – some of the kids were hard for me to hear). Kudos to their teachers for helping raise such great kids. I looked around the room and recognized many people I grew up with. I didn’t always remember their names, but after nearly 40 years, I still recognized something in them. So, when I looked at JC and his classmates I could already see them growing up, eating lunch, playing ball, dating, learning to drive, all the things my kindergarten class grew up doing together. The kind of community that raises generation after generation together is really special. Growing up together in a small town binds people like no other experience. I wouldn’t trade my childhood – and the people with whom I grew up – for anything. I hope it serves JC and his friends as well as it served me.
