While the family was eating I snuck (sneaked?) into the tiny chapel of uncle James’ church. It’s quite possibly the smallest chapel I’ve ever been to. That’s not a bad thing. In fact, it felt very comfortable and welcoming. I was standing at the alter admiring the baptistry when cousin Steven, James’ son, quietly walked up behind me and said his mother had chosen the mural painted above it. And just like that, he was gone before we could talk more about the church’s history. I enjoyed seeing this church, this sacred space James loved so much.

I walked in and admired the sanctuary too. I agree with your sentiment. The word that comes to mind for me is – intimate. Jesus focused most of His attention on 12 men. His church was actually just a small group of people. Many people measure the greatness of a church in terms of great numbers. But I think Jesus measures the greatness of a church in terms of love for one another and fidelity to the scripture. I don’t know how many people this church averages, but I imagine they represent Jesus pretty well since James, Marci and Steven felt at home in this fellowship. May God continue to bless this fellowship until Jesus returns.
