Rod Rickey is every bit as handsome in person as he is in photos, but he’s a whole lot more than a pretty face. One of the things I admire about Rod is just how creative he is. What’s more, he’s not afraid to try something new, explore ideas, think outside the box, as cliché as that may sound. Several months ago he decided to take up blacksmithing. He’d never done it, but he had a few ideas he wanted to try. So he built himself a blacksmith shop and got to work. He honored me with one of his first creations (below): a fire poker. The guy is just eat up with smart, artistic sense. One other thing I love about Rod; he’s a kind man. For example, he told me his work is coal fired. I thought about it for a minute then asked, “So, what’s the opposite of cold fired? Hot fired?” I giggled. “Coal: C-O-A-L,” he said calmly without changing his expression. As I sat wondering if I should have my hearing checked, and Angie and Diane laughed their butts off at my misunderstanding (rightfully so), Rod just kept talking about the process so that I didn’t feel any more an idiot. I was surprised to learn he gets his coal – that’s C-O-A-L – from a Peabody strip mine about an hour north of Tahlequah. I had no idea they were mining coal in the Ozark region. In any case, I’m still laughing at myself, and I’m sure Angie, Diane, and Rod are, too. It will be a hysterically funny story to laugh about for years to come. Meanwhile, that Rod Rickey: He’s a keeper.
