Point Vicente
Pointe Vicente and its lighthouse juts into the sea between Long Beach and Los Angeles. The photos don’t fully convey the scale of the cliff, which rises over 300 feet above the water. Even in person the height is deceptive. Surfers look like seagulls. Boulders look like pebbles. Even Catalina Island in the distance is deceiving in scale. The lighthouse itself is nearly 70 feet tall. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1926, and manned until 1971 when it was automated. It’s run by the U.S. Coast Guard whom live on the premises nearby. The small peninsula is opened to the public one Saturday a month. The rest of the time it’s cordoned off by high fences. It wasn’t open when I was there, but it’s still a beautiful sight, even from a distance on an overcast day. It was a delightful discovery.
