“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.’” ~ John Muir

call me Chef

I will never eat Manwich without thinking fondly of Greg Daniel’s mother, Wanda, who, long before this can’s suggestion, introduced a slice of American Cheese to the sandwich to me. She and Greg gave me one of the best summers of my life. I was 16. I would drive up Williams Creek to their house where Greg had inherited his brother Bobby’s darkroom. We would ride motorcycles up and down the holler, across strip mines, photographing this and that, then return to the basement darkroom to discover what we’d captured. Wanda always made sure we ate. It was a summer I’ve never forgotten, and her kindness will stay with me always.
