A few weeks ago Annie Bassoni and I noticed a weed reaching for the sky from a particularly dead and gone spot in the yard. Its leaves were suspiciously squash-like. That spot happened to have been my garden five years ago. We decided against mowing the plant just to see what, if anything, would become of it. Today, that weed has blossoms that look suspiciously squash-like. Growth from death – a metaphor for life, no?
