“Be curious. Not Judgmental.” ~ Unknown
If anyone believes Covid isn’t real or no worse than the flu, I’d wish them to see this photo. Here, mom tries to tell her sister Janet that she loves her through a window of the Covid ward on a freezing cold night. This is as close as we can get to her, and the closest we’ve been able to get after a resurgence of the virus. It seemed inevitable that Aunt Janet should finally fall victim despite being vaccinated and boosted. The devoted staff need to go home, have lives, hug their children, go to the grocery. In an area where masking and vaccination rebellion run red, the conscientious staff have their own battles to fight outside of work that can leave them and their patients vulnerable. Yet, to their credit, even though Janet is not the first resident to contract the virus, no one has yet died in large part because of the staff’s efforts. They and the residents are tested weekly, all possible precautions taken daily, and necessary action swift. Janet tested positive a week ago and was administered the anti-body infusion same day. The treatment has helped keep her fever at bay and coughing to a minimum, thank God. She clearly doesn’t feel good though. She can’t taste or smell, and as a result, isn’t eating. It’s really bad that she’s sick, but it’s utterly heartbreaking to stand outside her window and make hand gestures instead of hugging her or at least offering words of comfort she can understand. Janet is one of the most gentle souls to ever walk this earth. If you have just a moment to say a prayer, light a candle, burn sage, or whatever way you observe and express compassion for her recovery, mom, dad, and I would be grateful.
