“Kindness and consideration of somebody besides yourself keeps you feeling young.” ~ Betty White
I baked a pumpkin pie in honor of Betty White’s passing today. Okay, okay, I was gonna bake a pie anyway, but I’m so sorry that Betty has left us, and only 17 days shy of her 100th birthday. Really, it’s a fitting cap on a universally crappy year. From insurrections to Covid spikes to fires and drought and tornadoes in December to Brian Oberly and Betty White’s deaths – and a whole bunch of others like Kentuckians Nick Stump, Ned Beatty, Patty Cox, Lynn Nickell, Scottyee Franklin, Ed McClannahan, bell hooks, Don Everly, Tom T. Hall and Larry Flynn (yes, he was from Kentucky), as well as the wondrous Desmond Tutu, Olympia Dukakis, Larry McMurtry, Cicely Tyson, Chick Corea, Christopher Plummer, Prince Phillip, Colin Powell, Anne Rice, Cloris Leachman, Ed Asner, and our most beloved drummer Charlie Watts. Still, I feel quite fortunate despite how horrible the year has been. None of my closest people have contracted Covid and we’re all still living…in spite of the vaccine trying to bake my brain. One band member now tours in one of the top bands in the world (and still plays with us). Another band member got some tracks on the BBC’s Top Gear. I helped my cousins discover a super old house. I’m still employed and got some much-needed help. Made good grades, learned cool stuff, played some good music, made new friends, got to see a few old ones (not as many as I’d like, thanks Covid), had wonderful birthdays and family gatherings, Kelly and Craig moved closer, had some awesome adventures, enjoyed Michael Sackett’s wedding, dropped a bunch of weight (again), and read some good books. Honestly, what more could I ask for? I’m grateful for all of it, even the stuff that hurt, like losing Brian Oberly and Betty White. Goodbye, 2021. Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
