Class of 2024
Macie Dean Moore graduated from Bryan Station High School today. The graduation was held at Rupp Arena downtown. The city’s public schools hold graduations there because their home gyms can’t handle the volume. There were almost as many kids in Macie’s graduating class as in the whole of Morgan County High School when I graduated in 1983. There were 124 in my graduating class. That wasn’t even a quarter of Macie’s class. Every kid in my class was white and English-speaking. Macie’s class was a melting pot of people, and in her whole school, there were students from 30 countries, and a thousand of the students (almost half the school) could speak and write fluently in more than one language. Last week, Macie received her lab coat and pin for passing her state exam as a certified nursing assistant. I was in the first senior class that was allowed to take college-level courses after school. Shoot, my senior year, the school got its first computer and only the three or four honor students could touch it. I’m proud Macie has done so well and grown up with so many amazing other kids. It will serve her well as she starts her life as an adult. Plus, she’s going to UK, and I am thrilled. You know who else would be thrilled about Macie’s accomplishments? Her Uncle Shorty. He loved Macie, and so do I.
