Well, tonight’s Blue Grass Trust deTour may have been the home run of home runs. We ventured to Bloomfield, Kentucky. If you’re as unfamiliar as I was, let me enlighten you. Bloomfield is west of Lexington, near Bardstown. It is surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills of wheat. It’s a small town of less than one thousand inhabitants and might be one of Kentucky’s best-kept secrets. Enter Linda and Jerry Bruckheimer. If the names sound familiar, but you can’t quite place them, you probably know their work better. Jerry is a movie producer. His films include Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many others. Linda is an author and photographer. She’s from Louisville, went to LA to be a photographer, met Jerry, married, made a ton of money, and said they wanted a place in Kentucky. They stumbled upon a 1,800-acre farm near Bloomfield and proceeded to buy and restore some of the downtown buildings. Historic Preservation is really Linda’s baby, and you can see what they were up against with the Nettie Jarvis Antiques shop. Over the years, the dynamic duo has added more downtown structures to their repertoire to the point that most of downtown is theirs (like Ernie’s Tavern, below, where the deTours gang had supper). They have restored the buildings to their historic value and installed smart businesses in each. They’re all decorated with incredible antiques and memorabilia, including Tom Cruse’s flight jacket from Top Gun in Ernie’s Tavern, which offers American fare (burgers and dogs) and good music. In fact, there’s good music in all the Bruckheimer businesses, and it’s all tailored to whatever shop you’re in. The antiques are strategically placed, too, and there are tons of them. It was a visual feast, I tell you, and if you’re looking for something somewhat local (to central Kentucky) to do on a Saturday, Bloomfield is the place to go. It’s a little slice of Hollywood in Central Kentucky.
