Monday, as the temps were dropping, I took the car in for a few small repairs, and per usual, Stacy and I played hometown tourists downtown while we waited. We walked past the corner of Upper and Short where the Lexington Diner used to sit. I miss that place. They had delicious simple foods and breakfast, something sorely lacking in downtown Lexington, especially on Mondays. My friend, Tasha, whom you met back in 2019 as an apprentice, had just taken over The Clock Shop, a business that had been a long-time resident when the building’s owner decided to renovate the entire structure. That was pretty crappy timing, to say the least. From the looks of it, it’ll be a while before she’s back in the building. This building has existed at least since 1886 and has provided small office spaces along Short Street. As you can see from the Sanborn Map section below, what once was open space behind and between the buildings has been filled in over time, roughly between the two red pillars visible in the bottom photo. The back window on the bottom floor has been filled in with brick, and, so far, it doesn’t look like they’re going to restore that opening. It’s interesting to see that, at some point after the 1958 map, the second-story bay window was restored, and it appears they’re going to repair and keep it. This bodes well for the rest of the building, though I do wish they’d restore that back window. Gosh, I sure love this stuff.
