Thanks to a class I’m taking with Crystal Wilkinson and Frank X Walker, I’ve discovered the brilliance of bell hooks. I’d known about her for a long time, but I had not read her work until recently. hooks is unapologetic in her assessment of the “imperialistic white nationalist capitalist patriarchy.” She is also a vocal feminist and champion of African Americans, particularly those native to Kentucky. She was teaching at Berea College until her death in 2021. Her chapter entitled Kentucky is My Fate spoke to me as a Kentuckian who has experienced how the rest of the world views us and why coming back to Kentucky and staying here matters. Plus, the way she talks about Place is relevant to my thesis. That reason alone was worth the class, but I’ve gotten so much more from this book than just thesis work. I’ve gained a renewed appreciation for how art can transform the world, one essay at a time.
