Eleanore Roosevelt slept here
This is the old Morgan County High School. Today, it houses county offices such as the county clerk, PVA, and sheriff. It was started in 1935 and completed in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration, part of Roosevelt’s New Deal to jumpstart the nation after the Great Depression. Eleanore Roosevelt came to West Liberty to christen the building. It remains a highlight in the county. Morgan County has two other native stone WPA schools, one at Crockett and one at Cannel City. Plus, the WPA built the old jail located behind the old courthouse. It used to house the Historical Society until they closed due to no staffing. The WPA also built wooden structure schools at Wrigley and Woodsbend. I think the school at Wrigley has been demolished (I haven’t seen it in decades), and the school at Woodsbend was empty when it took on damage from the 2012 tornado. It will take some digging to find the architectural drawings for any of these schools if they still exist and are accessible. Let the search begin.
