“I’d rather be all by myself, barefoot with wild hair, talking to the moon than be just parts of me that fit in with how people expect me to be.” ~ Unknown
It’s Groundhog Day, and that means only one thing. No, not Puxautawny Phil and his predictions. It means Hero and Shero should be celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary. In his absence, we had his favorite meal at Longhorn Steakhouse. He loved a good steak, and he loved steak at Longhorn. A few months before he died, we discovered that he no longer liked steak. I don’t know if it was because the disease changed his sense of taste or that he needed help cutting the meat, a fact that, despite it all, he understood all too well and didn’t like it one bit. There were some aspects of his personality that he never lost, and being humiliated because he was unable to do for himself was one of them. Although we miss him something awful, Shero and I had a good time together. We ate, talked, laughed, and reminisced about Hero as if he was just in another room, or in his case, gone fishing more likely. I feel pretty lucky to have had my parents as long as I have. Many don’t get that privilege.
