no salt, please
Salt. Not only are we introducing something foreign into the local water and soil, but salt eats stone. (although we have some amounts of salt in both; we are not Florida) Salt really kinda hates limestone. Limestone is quite porous, and while it is said to calcify grass and aid in the strength of racehorses, it sucks up salt that then bores holes into, and eventually, through it. These are, were, the beautiful stone pillars beside the front doors of King Library. Every year, they deteriorate a little more, pockmarked and stained, and there’s no reversal. They will eventually crumble into pieces. While these aren’t structural supports, they are an essential building aesthetic, and their slow destruction is preventable. grrr <steps off unsalted soapbox> It might be time for this preservationist to take a nap.
