Reinette and I presented today at the Library’s annual Research and Innovation Day. Reinette gave the presentation because it was mostly about her research. I just talked about the value of newspapers representing all people of Kentucky fairly, but she drove home the point about how valuable newspapers are to research. Let me tell you, she is a captivating speaker. Every person in that room hung on her every word- her delivery, mercy; I wish I had that kind of charisma. She can be talking about some of the harshest human conditions you can imagine, but rather than make you wince, you feel empathy (well, those of us in this country who still practice empathy for other human beings, that is). And she’ll make you laugh, and that always helps take the edge off. She doesn’t do easy work, but it’s some of the most important work. I am incredibly proud of Reinette and always so honored when she asks me to come along for the ride. I learn an incredible amount from her, and boy, am I grateful for it.
