“Kindness is not an act, it is a reflection of your soul.” ~ Unknown
You haven’t heard me talk about Eugene Crase before, and that’s because we haven’t seen each other in well over 30 years. Last fall, when our 40th high school reunion was coming up, he found me, and he’s been waiting for me to get this thesis off my plate so I can find the time and headspace to have dinner. We spent so, so, so much time together in high school that we bonded beyond reason. We even went to Olin Mills to have portraits made because we felt like siblings, and I had always wanted a brother. He stayed with us all the time, and we had more fun than any two people should have ever had. We loved music – metal (of course) – and horror movies (the gorier, the better) – we traded dirty jokes on a daily basis – we smoked like chimneys – and basically adored each other. I was engaged to his best friend for a time, and when he (Steve) went into the Marines, we sent him the photo below to perk him up. We eventually broke up, I auditioned for Radio Cafe that became Stealin Horses and started touring, Eugene took up with a woman who didn’t like him hanging out with me or any other woman, and then – boom – 40 years went by. I’m so looking forward to spending a long meal and chatting with him after all this time. I bet he remembers every joke we ever told. I love the photo above. It was the 1982 Sorghum Festival, our senior year of high school, and look, it’s Aunt Jill, too! What a wonderful life I’ve had to still be friends with my peeps for our whole lives. That’s something special.
