“I hope you find time to be happy, not just strong and resilient.” ~ Unknown

never too old

While we were still in the parking lot, my concert buddy, Judy, made a comment about being the oldest person at the show when a stranger walked up, handed her the mushroom hat, and said something like, “Here, this is for you,” and went on his way. She loaned it to me because I was having a bad hair day. It set the stage for what proved to be a trippy evening. The hat did not stand out among the audience. My favorite of the night had to be the older shirtless man in a kimono, shorts, and flip-flops wearing a baseball hat with many fishing lures attached. He appeared to be quite the ambassador among the floor crowd, greeting and hugging many others as they arrived. I think Judy’s favorite was the lady with a rainbow cowboy hat with flashing lights in place of a traditional hatband. The floor was split into two sections; the front section was standing only, with plenty of space for dancing, to which several young hippie chicks took full advantage. One girl in particular made me kind of dizzy as she spun endlessly. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have an inner ear that lets you do that. Incidentally, Judy was far from the oldest person at the show.

Anyway, after the shock of Billy’s mom’s passing had settled, which you can read more about here, we enjoyed some of the best picking in the world and a pretty cool light show that somehow didn’t detract from the music, but accentuated it. Making our exit, we wound our way through a party atmosphere outside filled with drummers playing cans, t-shirt hawkers, and a guy with a helium canister filling balloons for passersby. It was fabulous. Did I mention the abundance of pot? I could smell it in the parking lot before we got into Rupp Arena. Once inside, the guy in front of us lit up as soon as the music started. It’s been years since I was at a show that included a copious amount of pot smoke. I was far from offended, but instead transported back to my younger years when every concert smelled like pot. However, the difference was that this audience was super chill, unlike the audiences of yore who also drank far too much alcohol and ruined their buzz when they threw up, ruining everybody else’s buzz, even the sober people. Socially, we’ve come a long way, judging by this crowd. So, yea, it was a great night of music, and I’m still hoping Billy’s heart will adjust soon to his mama’s absence.
