Just inside the annual Berea Craft Fair at Indian Fort Theater, we found our hot and tired friend Deb. Stacy and I go to the show every year, and every year it is brutally hot with at least one downpour. There was one difference, though. I met Deb’s good friend Marianne Brown, Kentucky potter extraordinaire. Her booth wasn’t far from Deb’s. I’ve enjoyed Marianne’s pottery for many years, but Stacy? Stacy adores her work and talks about it all the time. I struck up a conversation with Marianne and watched Stacy peruse her beautiful work, admiring it in person. Online photos are nice and all, but when it comes to art, nothing beats the real thing. Marianne is shown here with her gorgeous new bowl in her new “Escher” line. This was the first bowl she made in this new line, and it was apparent how much she loved it. I think every artist feels that way about special pieces. I smudged Marianne’s face here because she hates to have her photo made. She was kind enough to allow me to photograph her with her beautiful bowl, so I want you to imagine her with a beautiful smile. The kind of smile people have when they talk about their children, their dogs, or their favorite bowl. It was a good day with good people and loads of art. I’m grateful for it all.
