“Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when we look back, everything is different.” ~ C.S. Lewis
When I chose today’s quote, I’d forgotten about these photos from Friday’s visit with Kevin Johnson. It’s fitting, actually. We three got through art school together. Kevin was in the MFA program. He’d come here from South Dakota by way of Texas. Crystal and I, and a lot of other undergrads, gravitated to Kevin because he was so technologically astute, and in many ways and on many occasions, did a far better job of teaching us than our professors. He and I shared an apartment during our last semester. After graduation, we went to work rehabbing Pence Hall. I folded after a day or two, but Kevin loved the work and persevered, and soon married his now ex-wife. My best friend, Jim Brown, had died just a few months earlier, so I moved out to the country looking for some peace and started working a billion part-time jobs, including landscaping, serving court papers, film processing at the old Stone Photo, delivering Auto Traders on weekends, and whatever else came up. Crystal returned to her native Ohio to work at a pool company before returning to Lexington in under two years. A lot has changed in the 28 years since we graduated, but the core of us remains the same. Kevin and Crystal are still the technological wizards they always were, and I am still interested in doing a billion things at once. I love these two beyond all telling, and I love the history we share. You indeed meet and make some of your best friends in college. Here’s proof.
