“Even a pause is part of the path.” ~ Unknown
I heard that local pop maker, Ale 8, over in Winchester, was making a new flavor using a rare Kentucky fruit, the paw paw, papaw, paw-paw, or pawpaw. Asimina triloba, the American pawpaw, is the largest indigenous fruit of North America, and the name may have once been confused with the tropical papaya. However, it does not taste like papaya. It tastes like a banana. Its soft interior is sometimes made into ice cream or custard, but Ale 8 partnered with Kentucky State University, which has the only pawpaw research program going, and decided to give it a try with pop. If you’re not from Kentucky, you may not be aware that Ale 8 is a favorite among much of the population here. The people who love Ale 8 really love it on a near insane level, and they will fight you for it. Always one to go against the grain, I hate it. I’d rather drink swamp water. I am in the minority, and I’m at peace with that. Ale 8 has been doing special flavors for a few years now, like cherry, blackberry, and orange cream, and of course, they have sugar-free and even caffeine-free versions of the original flavor, which is really saying something because Ale 8 will give you a jolt stronger than espresso. I’ve tried them all, and they still taste too Ale 8 to me. The pawpaw flavor? It’s incredible! You wouldn’t think drinking something that tastes like a banana would be refreshing, but lo, you’d be wrong. It’s delicious, refreshing, and I love everything about how they’ve put it together, from pairing one true Kentucky original with another and teaming with KSU to make it happen. Well done, Ale 8. You won me over at last. That only took 60 years.
