“The world needs both your fire and your calm.” ~ Unknown

August makes me think of apples. Both of my grandmothers dried apples to use later in apple stack cakes. Some apples would freeze well and made delicious fried apples and fried apple pies. Shero has mastered the fried apples and makes them often with her biscuits. No wonder I’m fat. She’s still struggling a bit with the fried apple pies, but then, she’s got big shoes to fill because her mother made the best fried apple pies in the universe. She also made my favorite traditional apple pie (my great aunt Ada ran a close second). No store-bought crust for Hannah Adams! When I moved to Barrow, Alaska, she desperately wanted me to have some of her pies. Not realizing I was 3,900 miles from West Liberty and 350 miles above the Arctic Circle, she mailed two of her beloved apple pies to me. They were two weeks being delivered. They were blue, and not because they were cold. I didn’t care because this really was a classic moment of the thought that counts, and it also illustrated how small her world was, having no sense of global distances. I called home and told her they were delicious, and then I did everything I could to dissuade her from sending more. She listened to me, but it will always be one of my favorite memories.
