Before you hurt someone, feel.
Before you speak. Think.”

I sat down to take a break and noticed Shero draped in jewelry. She’d been going through Mamaw and Aunt Janet’s totes, and each had a small jewelry box. None of the jewelry was really Shero’s style, but that wasn’t the point. Where she was drawn to the jewelry, I was drawn to the photographs and other ephemera, like the Church of God plate below. I was a small child when they were made. This is Mamaw’s that hung in the kitchen and still survived the tornado. Shero’s plate, not hanging on the wall for fifty years, is in better condition. The three children are my grandfather, Oriville “Bodine” Adams, standing, his younger brother, Wick, and his sister, Edna Adams Leggett, whom I called Banana (no one knows why). It must have been Sunday because they had on their best clothes. Shero’s deck has been the perfect staging area for all the totes, and we’ve found so many things we’d both forgotten. We got most everything sorted and ready for the yard sale, and let me tell you, neither of us will have trouble sleeping tonight. Stick a fork in me, I’m done.
