too much

Doesn’t that congratulatory note from the fitness app on my Apple Watch look impressive? Do you know why I got that notification? Three times in the last two weeks, I’ve had to park so far away from the office that my watch thought I was working out. That’s how bad UK parking has become this semester. I’ve been a student or employee at UK for over 30 years, and I have never experienced traffic congestion and lack of parking like I have in the last two weeks.  I am far from the only old-timer to remark about how bad it has become. Once again, we’ve enrolled a record freshman class, and once again, the university has not planned for it. There’s a lack of housing on campus and off. There’s a lack of classroom and study space. The city’s infrastructure is not equipped to handle the influx of 30,000 students within a two-square-mile radius, and there is a growing shortage of parking for those of us who pay as much for parking as we do for health insurance. I adore the University of Kentucky, and it has given me a decent life, but sometimes I shake my head and wonder if the bean counters are capable of seeing the effects their over-eager ways have on the people and place that actually make the university work. I’m not mad. I’m sad. I guess I’ll change my app workout to account for the extra half-mile my new daily walk has added. Or maybe I’ll just walk two miles to work and save that annual $500 parking pass bill. It’s not that much further than the parking garage. I’ll pretend I’ve quit smoking again. Shoot, I might take a big vacation with all that savings.
