For over a decade, I’ve wanted the ability to record drums at my house. That time finally came. Today, I cut two tracks for two different projects; one in England and one here in the States, although I’m the only player in Kentucky. Until today, in virtually every recording situation I’ve been in, I’ve had to cut my tracks first (with only a rough vocal and guitar) and quickly, often tracking up to 10 tracks in a single day. That also meant they had to be fairly perfect from start to finish because punching in drums (making an edit) on tape is extremely hard to do, and almost never works perfectly because there are multiple mics. If the snare is a couple of milliseconds off, it’s off on all the drum tracks, so you can’t just punch in the snare. Digital recording made it a lot easier, but you still have multiple mics on multiple drums, and if you make one mistake, it’s everywhere like it was on tape. In a recording studio, time is money, and I was never in a position to record to my heart’s content. I couldn’t experiment with certain sounds or techniques. I could rarely do multiple takes for a single song and choose which one I liked best. It was quickly cut the song, and move on to the next one. I’ve learned a lot already, and as I continue to perfect the set-up, the audio quality and I will just get better. There’s no going back now, thank God. I am extremely grateful to be able to do this.
