“You are privileged if you have someone who checks on you with no motive other than love.” ~ Nedra Tawwab
I didn’t realize when we made a date for dinner that it would coincide with my 25th anniversary at UK. Technically, I started on April 7, but I bounced between soft-money and regular positions for a while, and one of those bounces was delayed by two weeks. UK then decided to move my start date by two weeks. That’s the way the big blue rolls, but I roll with my homies that I started with. Marie Dale trained me on my first day, and by the end of the week, we had bonded over Pop-Tarts. She only liked the edges; I loved the centers. It was a chocolate-and-peanut-butter moment. Although Marie started ten years before me, we had hoped to retire together, but that only worked out slightly. She fully retired in January, and I’m starting phased retirement on Friday. But we got the year right! Meanwhile, Crystal, who started six years after I did, still has a ways to go, but she was UK’s best hire bar none and they’re lucky to have her. Marie and I will be waiting to celebrate her when it’s her turn to walk out the door. Until then, we’ll keep meeting for dinner and enjoying our time together, however brief.
