Last summer, Chuck authenticated transcripts of oral history interviews with Porter G. “PG” Peeples, Sr, one of Kentucky’s finest. He was blown away by PG’s work ethic and commitment to racial equality. He really wanted to meet PG, and we found a little time before his sixth interview to make that happen. It did my heart good to see Chuck meet someone he respected so much. Sadly, PG passed away yesterday after struggling for some time with his health. It is a blow to everyone who knew him and to the thousands of people whose lives were improved by his work as head of the Urban League of Lexington for more than 50 years. Mr. Peeples treated Chuck like an old friend. He treated me with genuine kindness, and we had a good time talking about Eastern Kentucky and guns, of all things. The saying goes that you can tell a person’s true character by how they treat the help. Chuck and I were just the help, and Mr. Peeples was a man of exquisite character.
