“Do more things that make you feel a little awkward. The most interesting experiences often start with having no clue what you’re doing.” ~ Lori Deschene
Hero has made me laugh all day. I was going through some of his things when I came upon what I reckoned was a watch box. I opened it to find a Kleenex wrapped around what I thought must be a watch. I carefully unwrapped the tissue, not to find a watch, or anything like a watch, but his partial plate. I laughed out loud and have been laughing all day. Of all the things I thought I might find among his earthly treasures, this was not on the list. It reminded me of the story Shero told about the time the two had been to Morehead and, on their way home, decided to stop at Pop’s, a little BBQ place on 801 by the lake. Hero had moved from his partial to a full set of dentures by this time. They ordered burgers. Hero took his first bite. Shero nearly spit out her food when she looked across the table to find him holding his burger, his dentures stuck in it, with a look of utter surprise. That was one tough burger. They did not eat at Pop’s again. I tried Pop’s not long after she told me the story. I then understood how he could have left his dentures in his burger. I have not eaten at Pop’s again either. Later in the day, I found Hero’s homemade box of lures. I mean, there’s really nothing duct tape can’t fix, except maybe his penmanship. He was a hoot.
