“One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up, instead of what they have to gain.” ~ Rick Godwin

where it started

I was granted funding two years ago through a UK faculty program called CURATE. The funds are designated for faculty to support a variety of research projects. Fast forward three years, and, for some reason, they like my research, which was connected to my thesis. They’ve put together a promotional video about the project in which I sound completely inept and terrified, and look even worse. I am not used to, or even remotely enjoy, being on the other side of the camera, and it shows. I’ll do it, but it is not my happy place. Anyway, leading up to the release of the promo, they asked for a photo of me with my photos or in my studio or using the gear… or all of the above, which is sort of what I’ve given them. This morning, I found a fish-eye lens for a super old iPhone, so I thought I’d see what that looked like. Needless to say, it’s not meant for my updated iPhone, and my studio, such as it is right now, doesn’t have enough room to turn around in, let alone shoot meaningful photos. Most of what I have is either in boxes or being printed for a solo exhibit I have coming up in July.  And since the project has nothing to do with music, photographing me with my drums wasn’t going to work, and that’s really all there is to see in the “studio” at present. But I got a weird fish-eye picture out of the deal. My drop-back and punt idea was to build something that looked like a studio in the living room, which is the only place I have with any room. I even smiled at myself! It’s better, but I still don’t like being in front of the camera. I have got to drop some weight, ya’ll, so I don’t panic when somebody takes my picture – even me! At least I was having a good hair day.
