it happened on the way to the forum
I logged on this morning to get ready for a meeting when I saw my inbox piling up with congratulatory emails. Today’s date didn’t register at first, but I soon realized it was July 8, the projected release date of a UKNOW article and video shot way back at the end of April about my research on place, identity, and natural disasters. Sure enough, the article had been released, and I was bowled over by the support from friends and colleagues alike. I was especially buoyed by emails from colleagues across campus I didn’t know but whose research intersected with mine in some way, who felt compelled to reach out. I feel like I made new friends. Yet, with every congratulation and kindness, the people I wanted most to tell of my good fortune are not here to tell. It’s a reality I must get used to. The fact that my research has been centered on my hometown and those who hold it as dear as I do gives me more strength than they know. What a blessing. Now, if I could just sound as smart when I talk as the article makes me seem, I might get somewhere. Talking was never one of my strong suits. I know you find that hard to believe – ha!
