kids and axes
Well, I had a fun afternoon. As I’ve mentioned before, Kathy is running for the Fayette County school board, and she has gotten the endorsement of the local and Louisville Teamsters unions (if I’m remembering right, and you know, I don’t always, so I wouldn’t quote me on that). The local unions were having a couple of fun, family-oriented events today, so off we went, pamphlets and camera in hand. First stop was Masterson Station Park, where families gathered for tons of food, a live band (I’ve heard worse), and my personal favorite: wrestling. I was unaware before today that there was a Kentucky Wrestling Federation. I was transported back to 1982. Eugene Crase in our basement on Saturday morning, watching “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Hulk Hogan, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, and Jerry Lawler. I had little choice but to join him, and over time, I began to appreciate the theater of it all, or I began to appreciate his enthusiasm for it. When we came upon an ongoing battle today, I had to pop off a few shots, and thoroughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane in the process. Then it was off to Battle Axes in an area of town undergoing an extreme makeover. Near Price Road, behind Lexington Cemetery and across the railroad track, is a road called Turner Commons Way. It used to be lined with tobacco warehouses. Now, it sports a distillery (under construction), a complex called “Pickleball Kingdom,” several small eateries, a water feature, a walking trail, and at the end, Battle Axes (above). I thought it was just a place for throwing axes, but they also have an indoor zip line, electric go-karts, a bouncy house, and more. I would have loved this place as a kid. Meanwhile, as an adult, it turns out that Labor Day is a big day for campaigning. We ran into Rocky Adkins’ wife, folks from the Zach Dembo camp, and a ton of people running for this, that, and the other office. Interestingly, I saw no Republican representatives at either event. In any case, it was a very interesting and entertaining day for me, and I’m sure there are a lot of kids sleeping happily and hard tonight.
