Meet my friend and colleague Theresa Yocum. We have great talks over chai. We have great talks in the lobby. Sometimes we even have great talks in the ladies room. It doesn’t matter where we are, we talk. In one such recent chat we discovered we’re both big ol’ walking mosquito buffets. Today, she gave me a citronella plant. She is so thoughtful! I had never heard of such a thing, but I’ve since learned that it’s in the geranium family. It’s very fragrant, and apparently, it gets quite large. They say that rubbing the leaves on your skin will ward off the bloodsucking fiends. Oddly though, within minutes of setting it down (at home, outside), mosquitoes were swarming it. A little research revealed this is not unusual. Do you think the marketers meant “it attracts mosquitoes”, not “it repels mosquitoes”? I don’t know how to break the news to Theresa. Honestly, this might be payback for the time I gave my friend, Cheryl Gevedon Cravens, what I was told was a pair of female finches. When I saw her three months later, she had 27 finches using her bedroom as an aviary. I’m surprised she still speaks to me.
