“Do not regret growing older. It’s a privilege denied to many.” ~ Unknown
Cotton fields line highway 331 south of Montgomery, Alabama. Every time I’ve been to Rosemary Beach I’ve wanted to snap a few shots. This morning I finally stopped. I have never looked at a field of cotton without thinking about slavery, and I doubt I ever will. Cicely Tyson starred in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman in 1974. It was a film that made a significant impact ton me. It helped fill whatever historical gaps may have been present in me at the time. The idea that human beings hold other human beings in complete servitude through violent means hurts my heart deeper than I can fully express. Looking at the cotton fields I can almost see the tired laborers, their fingers chaffed and bleeding from the cotton stickers, their backs sore, their bodies old before their time. I am so thankful to the many thousands of men and women who worked, and still work, tirelessly to end such horrid circumstances. The world is a better place because of them.
