Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter.

My friend Ken Bailey is in a pickle. His talented singer/songwriter son, Daniel, was born with a rare kidney disease. Now, 30ish years later, he needs a kidney or he’s going to die. It’s that simple. Ken isn’t a match. Family members often aren’t. My dad’s oldest brother needed a kidney. His son Michael was a match. He gave his father a kidney. My dad lost a kidney to cancer 14 years ago. His other kidney has a cyst. Part of the reason I take care of myself is because I may soon find myself in Michael and Ken’s shoes. If I’m a match, dad will have a kidney. If I’m not, Ken will need to make a place for me in the Helpless Boat. Today, on dialysis, medical bills climbing, Daniel continues to wait for his miracle. Friends have put their hearts into making these small Save Daniel Bailey bracelets in an effort to help with the medical bills, and to spread the word that being an organ donor will save someone’s life. My bracelet arrived yesterday. For me, $10 is a small price to feel a little less helpless. My prayer is that Daniel will get his kidney soon, that his life will unfold in unimaginably positive ways, and that we each become organ donors so that no one ever has to face this sort of unimaginable helplessness.
