“Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

You might recall some time ago as part of my sacred spaces explorations I mentioned how we see more and more roadside tributes, makeshift monuments if you will, in places where a loved one has lost their life. There’s one such monument I pass every time I go see my folks on Highway 801 near Cave Run Lake. This one. On one of my recent trips I had time to stop and take a closer look. I don’t know the man whose name is written on the cross, nor do I know exactly what happened to him. Perhaps he hit the utility pole, or perhaps he didn’t make the curve and rolled. Or maybe he spun out of control and hit the solid rock hillside. Whatever happened, his family felt the need to erect a white cross in his honor and adorn it with a hanging basket of flowers. For all the roadside crosses I’ve passed over the years I’ve never once seen anyone attending them. Do families come to grieve at these crosses? To talk to their loved one? Are they sacred spaces? Or are these crosses meant simply to warn us of the dangers along the way?
