This house sparrow couple are raising a brood in mom and dad’s mast head. A few days ago I watched as they took turn-about feeding their little chirpers, which, by the way, are very vocal. I read Birds of the Bible by Debbie Blue in which she told the story of house sparrows in biblical times being sold in the markets as kabobs (she wasn’t clear if they’d been pre-cooked). Now, 2,000 years ago I don’t know if house sparrows were as small as this pair, but if they were, that’s a lot of sparrows on a kabob. Plus, no. The idea invokes sad visions and that’s not allowed on an otherwise fabulous day, which today was. My sister from another mister, Kiya Heartwood, turned the big 60 today. Not only did I call to wish her a happy day, but I got to zoom with many of her friends from around the country to virtually wish her a happy six-zero. It was good fun, and I’m so glad that we have survived long enough to live through (most of) middle age. I look forward to continued birthday celebrations with her. We’ve been through the wars together and there’s just nobody else like her in my life. I’m eternally grateful to her and for her.
