St Louis Cathedral Basilica
One of the cool things we had time to do with Kelly and Craig was to explore the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica. The construction of this 83,000 square foot cathedral started in 1907. It is made from a 41.5 million-piece mosaic in 7,000 colors by 20 artists that wasn’t completed until 1988. So impressive was the feat that it was made a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997. None of these photographs give a sense for just how big the basilica is. You have to go there, stand in it. Sit down for a while. You could spend all day and still overlook some of the art. It’s incredibly dark inside, making photos of any kind tough. If you love sacred spaces, go. If you love sacred art, go. No photos can do it justice.
