“You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” ~ Margery Williams Bianco (The Velveteen Rabbit)
Funny thing about lenses, they can make things looks bigger or smaller, taller or shorter, wider or thinner. The road looks bigger than it is, while the hill definitely looks smaller than it is. It is a beast to climb, let along bury a loved one. Cousin friend Larry Scott Evans, II had to mow this beast when he was a young man. Now, he’s got one leg shorter than the other (kidding). Our Aunt Ada Risner Sparks used to attend church at this little chapel. I’m told it sat near my great-grandparent’s house, which was torn down before I came along. Now, there are two houses sitting where once there was one, blocking the view of the cemetery. We can always count on Lena Gail Litteral who lives in one of the houses to be out under her tent every Memorial Day weekend to take funds for the upkeep. Everybody stops for a chat, catches up on kids, husbands, wives, grandchildren, health, politics, church; you name it. In 15 minutes you’re all caught up as if you’ve never been away. There’s something so small town about that, and I’m incredibly grateful to have been brought up in it. It’s part of who I am.
