“None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody—a parent, a teacher, an Ivy League crony, or a few nuns—bent down and helped us pick up our boots.” ~ Thurgood Marshall
We had business at the County Clerk’s office where one of Hero’s all-time favorites works. Jennifer Potter Whittaker said she always blows bubbles for kids when they come in, and when she found out it was Shero’s birthday, she reckoned Shero deserved bubbles, too. Blowing bubbles under a plexiglass divider takes some talent, but Jennifer had clearly practiced, and it tickled Shero like it must tickle the children. Jennifer is from one of those fantastic Morgan County families I’ve known for a lifetime. Her brother, Denzil, and Hero were big-time buddies, starting one of the local trap shoot ranges (sad that I don’t remember what it was called anymore). Poor Denzil left this mortal coil suddenly in 2018, but I’m sure he and Hero have been shooting heavenly skeet for the last two years. It sure was good to see Jennifer, and her kindness reminds me once more that being from a small town and staying rooted in a small town has some advantages that a city will never have. I am eternally grateful for being one of those lucky small-town people.
