“Let them hate. Just make sure they spell your name right.” ~ Harvey Specter
Shero wasn’t the only gem born on January 24. She shares her birthday with Jennifer Adkins Reynolds. For Shero’s birthday, she wanted her hair trimmed by her friend Janice and lunch with her BFF Martha Conley, who, with Betina and Hope’s help, made soup beans, fried potatoes, kraut and weiners, and cornbread. For Jennifer’s birthday, she asked her dad for soup beans, fried potatoes, and cornbread. Gas-X became the joke that day, especially for Betina, who attended both birthday feedings.
We had just a few minutes to stop by Tony’s on our way out of town as he and Charleen were cooking the evening’s birthday feast and waiting for the guest of honor to arrive (sadly, we had to leave before Jennifer arrived). Food, this menu in particular, might sound like a simple request, but having soup beans, fried potatoes, and cornbread made for you by people you love is to hill folk what I imagine caviar and champagne might be for the wealthy. More than the eating, though, it’s the dedication and love in the cooking that counts, and that comes through in the taste. There’s really nothing like this meal cooked in the mountains and shared with those you love.
