Charlene has been cooking, cleaning, gardening, canning, and working her entire life. She was 13 when I was born, and my first memory of her was standing at an ironing board ironing her brothers’ pants (that plural brothers – four or five of the nine were still at home at the time). Here, she demonstrates her favorite electric frying pan. She said she fried chicken in it for the better part of a decade, but for Jennifer’s birthday, she was frying potatoes. I have a similar but smaller, beloved electric frying pan in which I’ve been frying potatoes for nearly 40 years. It’s so old you can’t see the numbers on the dial anymore. When a woman finds an appliance she likes, it will be used until they carry it out of the house in pieces. By the way, Charlene is an exceptional cook. In fact, all my aunts have been extraordinary cooks. Everyone should be so lucky.
