Dan The Man
Dan Shanks was the King Library building operator when I started at UK over 24 years ago. Marie, who knew everybody, introduced us almost immediately, or at least it seemed that way. We hit it off, and we have remained friends all these years. Dan took a facilities position in another building across campus, and we hardly ever saw him again. Early this morning, a guy walked into the office asking to see Kopana. He had to get right up to the desk before I recognized him, but boy, when I did, he got a big ‘ol Kopana hug (not many people get those). Our visit was cut short by a meeting, but it made my day to catch up a little with Dan. He’s retiring next month, just as his daughter enters UK as a freshman in August. He wasn’t even married when we met, let alone a father. A lot of good things can happen in twenty-four years, and I couldn’t be happier for Dan on all fronts. He’s a smart guy to retire. Enjoy your coffee from that terrific front porch, buddy. Don’t forget the rest of us still toiling away for the man.
