“Love yourself enough to know when enough is enough.” ~ Unknown
My old friend Brent “EZ” Miller left this mortal coil on May 9, the day before my graduation last week. Bad heart that he’d been struggling with for several years. There’s been so much going on over the last week that I haven’t had time to fully process that he’s no longer with us. EZ was a hoot. He hung out with artists and musicians all the time, and that’s how we met. In fact, I’ve known him so long I’ve forgotten the first time we met, now that I think about it. We’d come off the road, and I’d swing by Arby’s, where he was manager, to order a sandwich just so I could talk to him. The day before we were set to leave for another tour, he asked me out to dinner when I got back. When I got back, he was dating someone else. We just went right on like nothing had changed, and that was okay with me because I valued his friendship more than anything else. He married his date and they had a beautiful daughter, Keara (below with her dad), who’s now a veterinarian. He was so stinking proud of her, and rightfully so.
Back in 2010, it seemed like the stars aligned to put us all in Tahlequah at the same time. We convened at one of Mark Sweeney’s gigs. Everybody felt good, looked good, the weather was perfect, the music was fantastic, and it was just the most memorable night imaginable. We somehow managed to capture this incredible group picture of all of us who were there that night (I think the only people missing are Pam Kingfisher and Layce Gardner). I can’t find the very last picture I have of EZ (it’s probably buried on my phone), but he was riding down Steve and Robin’s driveway on a riding mower, waving like he’d just ridden off the plains after three days. That was probably seven or eight years ago. I hadn’t seen EZ in a long time, but he was never far from my thoughts, and never ever out of my heart. As he said when people he loved passed, “Requiescat in pace,” dear friend. October 1963-May 2025.
