My Uncle Darrell is the funniest man alive. He’s got a million stories, some of them true. “As dad used to say,” he told me last Saturday, ” If at first you don’t succeed, there’s summer school.” He claimed to have attended summer school twice. True? Hard to say. I asked my Uncle Harold, Darrell’s twin brother, if that was true. “Maybe,” he said with a straight face, offering no further explanation. Now, let me tell you, Darrell is one of the most self-deprecating people I know, which is why a repeat offender of summer school may or may not have been true. In reality, he’s extraordinary. He has cheated death I don’t know how many times, starting with his open heart surgery when he was only 17 years old. It’s been his way ever since. Through it all, he has counseled and championed individuals with significant emotional and mental health issues, helping them feel better about themselves and contribute to society in the best possible ways. He’s got the only disposition that could handle such a job, and he has never stopped smiling. He’s the best.
