“The secret, dear Alice, is to surround yourself with people who make you laugh.” ~ Alice in Wonderland

smiling through the apocalypse

So sick she can barely lift her head, and yet she manages a smile. Hero was the same way. They always indulged me and my camera. My endless thanks to Ken “Doll” and Crystal for taking the dogs so I can spend the night at the hospital. Shero’s biopsy is scheduled for 8:45 in the morning. We’ll know what we’re really dealing with by evening, and hopefully the antibiotics will have started working by then, too, so she can start treating the root problem. They have been treating the most threatening problem (even worse than the pneumonia, if you can believe it), which is a weird thing called Tumor Lysis Syndrome.  This usually happens after chemo, but for Shero, ever the medical cunundrum, hers actually led her to the ER where everything else was discovered. In short, TLS is when cancer cells die and flood your bloodstream with toxins like Uric Acid that can shut down your kidneys or cause a heart attack. This is why they’ve been so aggressive with their treatment of her since she got to the ER the fourth time. We were extremely fortunate to get a brilliant doctor named Dr. Sarah Vick, MD. She and her team have done nothing but their very best for Shero, and they’re amazed at how tenacious she is, given her grave condition. Keep those prayers flowing. The doctors haven’t given up on her, and I haven’t either.
