Batman’s Robin
Drew Singerman has been Robin to Dr. Vick’s Batman for the last 10 days, and, like her, he embodies today’s quote. He has visited Shero several times a day, every day, and has been a constant source of information and support to me. And, like Dr. Vick, he has incredible people skills, making us feel cared for from the moment we met. I think Shero’s decline over the last week has been, in some ways, as hurtful to him as it has been for me. I’ve learned so much from him about the interconnectedness among all these specialists and the nursing staff over the past week. I’ve watched how every setback they’ve had to tell me has been a setback for them, too. As Shero’s GP said, “It’s like we’ve failed when we can’t fix it.” I felt that, and I’ve seen it in the eyes and the tone of voice in Drew, Dr. Vick, Dr. Zena Chahine, her oncologist, Dr. Rolando Berger, her long-time pulmonologist, and her GP Dr. Terrance O’Neill. They’ve all come to talk to me, in part to say goodbye to her, but also, in their own way, to say I’m sorry I couldn’t fix it. They have all worked so hard to get her this far, Drs Berger and O’Neill especially, that it’s hard when a patient just can’t overcome the obstacles. Shero’s Leukemia is completely treatable. The Tumor Lysis and Pneumonia have been greatly resolved. Unfortunately, all of it together has made her gravely weak. With her age and weakness, it would be a true miracle if she could somehow come back from it, but we all eventually meet a hurdle we can’t clear, I guess. I have a meeting with Hospice on Monday, and we’ll see what comes next. In the meantime, I am forever grateful to Drew for his kindness and genuine care for my Shero. I really am the luckiest woman in the world to have him and this medical team on my side.
